The short version: Azan is built to know as little about you as possible. No account. No name, email, or phone number. No advertising trackers. No selling of data — ever.
Your location is used only on your device to calculate prayer times and qibla direction. Photos of ingredient labels are processed by on-device text recognition; the image never leaves your phone. Your scan history and all settings are stored locally on your device only.
When you scan a product we receive: the barcode number and/or the ingredient text extracted on your device, your chosen strictness setting, and a random anonymous device identifier (used only to enforce fair-use scan limits; it is not linked to your identity). Product verdicts are cached without any user information.
Open Food Facts (barcode → product lookup): receives the barcode number. OpenAI (analysis of unrecognized ingredients): receives ingredient names only — never images, never location, never your device identifier. Railway hosts our server infrastructure. If you purchase a subscription, payment is handled entirely by Apple's App Store or Google Play; we never see your payment details. Subscription state is managed by RevenueCat using an anonymous identifier.
Anonymous scan events used for rate-limiting are automatically discarded. Cached product verdicts contain no personal data. Deleting the app removes your on-device data (history, settings, identifier). Because we hold no account for you, there is no personal profile for us to delete — that is by design.
Azan does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children.
Halal assessments in Azan are informational guidance based on ingredient analysis. They are not a fatwa or a halal certification. For critical decisions, verify with a recognized certification body.
